1965- THE ARCH FOUNTAIN
The St Louis Gateway Arch- one of the most inspiring and graceful landmarks of any city in the world. It gives St Louis its definitive skyline and yet most St Louisans take it for granted.
One of the main purposes of the Arch project is to accentuate this landmark with a fitting memorial that will complement it and hopefully transform the city around it.

To honor the completion of this architectural landmark from the mind of Eero Saarinen, I propose a simple fountain in the shape of an arch. Water, when shot at an angle tends to approximate the shape of an arch naturally, and that should be fully utilized to draw attention the the landmark that inspires it.
There are two ways to go- either with a tall, majestic fountain that approximates the shape and glory of the arch, or with a smaller and more detailed fountain that takes full advantage of the fountain medium. Because water transmits light, a fountain rainbow is an attractive possibility. One could even design a fountain that begins as two small posts and rises higher and higher as the arch did, eventually making the complete sculpture.
